you can count with your hands how many mathematicians can live off their craft and live with decency, you have to literally be among the best in the world to have an actual chance at living off from maths.
unless you work in the bank or become a professor in a prestigious university or you join a space program, you will literally starve to death.
the jobs maths offer are soul crushing and take away your very dignity, you'll end up more bitter than fucking squidward and hate living.
no wonder people look down on math professors these days, if you compared the lives of mathematicians and engineers in general, engineers held an overall advantage compared to mathematicians.

TL;DR engineers are superior to mathematicians when the opposite is supposed to be the case.
