Could the Indians be on to something?
Let's say you have a designated shitting street, with sewage flowing beneath it. When someone shits in a hole, the shit will be carried away by the flow of the sewage, which means you don't need to flush.
I think this might actually save water costs, but I'm not an engineer, so I'm not sure.
