Suppose that it's exactly as you said. Then the child must still possess innate talent, knack in order to be really great, which the vast majority of humans do not, the more so the more complex math gets as it leaves human cognition behind.

So, the reason why you're supposed to be impressed is that the objectively talented individual was also fortunate enough to have healthy parental and social encouragement in his socially acceptable and marketable skill.
