Shoul I stay as a physics major if I wanna make significant contribuitions? Are mathematicians better suited for the endevours of modern physics in the theoretical aspect?

Physics major is a marketing scheme, know physics but be a math major - your primary concern should be running to understand the basic geometry behind physics - symplectic Geometry, the theory of bundles, characteristic classes, relevant Algebra (and some analysis but not such a major thing), etc

Fundamental physics has been moving at a glacial pace for decades. Unless your idea of significant contribution is working on papers with 1000 people about not finding a specific decay of some hypothesized SUSY particle, stay away from that. On the theory side, you can study stuff likely divorced from reality, or you can desperately shit out papers whenever the experimentalists find some anomaly showing how your favorite model can explain it only for it to revealed as a statistical fluke as more data comes in. Fundamental stuff isn't everything, though, so maybe you could make contributions in one of the more "stamp collecting"ish branches.

This is only true for a subset of fundamental physics, stuff that has been getting less publicity but moving fine still exists - and I guess I'd add it is important to keep in mind the role of mathematics in physics. Every time this seems to happen someone causes a paradigm change.

What sort of stuff are you referring to? Sure, we learned more stuff about neutrinos and cosmology while colliders were spending 17 years to find the next particle everyone already expected, but I'd only call that fast by comparison.
