And you understand that other people have been through things.
And there's an unspoken mutual acknowledgment that you have your own histories.
For some people this happens earlier:
people who have lost loved ones
who have lived in difficult circumstances
who have struggled
who have met with adversity and overcome it or maybe are living with it or had it defeat them, and have carried on.
It can come with broadening your horizons, too:
living abroad
getting to know people who have lived completely different existences than anyone you know
living outside your 'comfort zone'
This is why people living sheltered lives (maybe OP?) can feel like they're living in a kind of suspended animation:
they haven't had the chance to experience enough to "feel" adult.
