I don't know any way to ask this that doesn't sound stupid so I'm just going to go and ask it: Do mathematicians have a field of research dedicated to cataloguing weaves of chainmail they way they do for shapes, tile patterns, knots and braids?

I know the concept of links exists in knot theory but when I looked on wikipedia for more information expecting to fall down a rabbit hole I just found a dead end. The only things i've found are random threads on obscure diy chainmail forums
