I'm aware they're most likely not very good for military stuff but they could be good for civilian applications and just cool events. What is stopping us from building them now? Motors? Gait programming?

We already have the tech for it considering the field of robotics is just one big machine that runs alot of little machines(or a computer in a different physical form) the main obstacle is simply material, carbon fiber poses to be a good one to use as its lighter and stronger than steel but costs alot to produce and wastes a ton of energy with modern manufacturing methods making recreational use pointless

Mechs are not possible because the inertial forces will always tear the metal apart every time it moves quickly. Either you can have a no-armor skeleton robot or a heavily armored sloth worm, but there will never be huge ninja armor mecha.
