I'm asking here because i couldnt get a satisfactory answer on /an/.

I want to bleach this crayfish white and then wet preserve him.

Currently he is in a 70/30 mix of methylated spirits and water. Pure spirits made him orange, which is a shame, hence i want to bleach him.

Keep in mind we cant actually buy formaldehyde in Australia.

Get Paraformaldehyde if you can. It is the same shit but you need to heat it up. It is the same stuff they use to kill bugs (think of circus tents on homes). Paraformaldehyde is a powder but will degrade overtime or heat into Formaldehyde.

Where I worked we made this all of the time. Kind of surprised since it really is a safe chemical since it wants to solidify at most temperatures.

Just produce it yourself, consider the following. All you need to do is catalytic oxidation of methanol which can be done by silver metal. Ideally you want large surface-to-volume ratio of the catalyst to vastly increase yield. Prepare the catalyst by depositing silver metal on glasswool by crashing the silver out of solution while the glasswool is submerged in the dissolved silver. This can be done by adding glucose to a solution of silver nitrate. Then place the glasswool with silver into a glass tube and create a setup somewhat similar to distillation. Using a simple aquarium pump pass air through the methanol to mix in oxygen, the methanol-oxygen mixture will now pass through the catalyst you just made and react to form formaldehyde, then capture it. To get the reaction going you may need to heat the catalyst first with a small torch, the catalyst will give off heat from the reaction itself once it starts so you don't need to continuously heat it. You can also consider slightly heating the methanol to increase the amount of vapors, but be careful when doing this. The result should be of high concentration formaldehyde. Purify further if needed, can be done several ways, you can google it. Only do this if you feel safe doing it, do it outdoors to get rid of the fumes and use your brain.
