Has everything groundbreaking already been invented (reusable rockets, self-driving cars, satellite internet constellations), and is there nothing left to invent or discover in science and technology? If so, how do I overcome this?

It is probably some sort of psychological bias that you are experiencing. Someone in the 16th century probably thought, "Yep, this is as good as it ever gets," same as you.

I'm a 2nd-year mechatronics major but willing to change or pair it with physics or CS. I find the fields of fusion energy, AI automation to quantum computing quite appealing and cannot narrow it down ATM.

changing all that is ahead of us. go into genetics and take controle of our evolution. go int robotics automation and ai so we dont have to do all the manual labor necesseary to survive. go into engineering so we can conquer the solar system and herness as much energy as we can. chose one of hundreds of paths forward. are you realy so arrogant or depressed as to think this generation of people and technology is the best humanity can achieve?

You should be grateful there are so many interesting things to study and so much shit to be invented. Focus on what most arouses your curiosity and be methodic. Also, you can always switch areas of expertise if you're willing to study the underlying material. Stop trying to be famous, that's the mentality of highschool girls.

well the way i see it, there is a lot ahead of us, and any little contribution i can add is worth while, no matter how small it may be. the way we get ahead is just time and effort. maybe im the next einstein/newton, or maybe, probably not. maybe a bit of my work will help the next einstein, or the guy whos work will helo the guy whos work will help... the next einstein. im happy spending my life in a lab, and i dont need money beyond what i need for a living. i am happy with my life and my choices. it is posible.
perhaps anon will find joy in research if that is what he seeks. there is yet research to do. if however he wants fame and fortune, if he thinks he can be the next genious just by whishing for it, if he thinks the life of a scientist is like a montage, pencil in teeth, inspirational music and when the music stops you will have FTL travel figured out, he will be miserable. perhaps my exhausted ramblings here will help anon get that.
