companies factor in cost of living into the salaries they pay. so yes, while cost of living is (much, much) more expensive than it should be, you're usually going to be more than able to offset that with the extra income you get (in addition to standard stock options, bonuses, etc.).

I have a CS degree from a Big Ten school and my job offers from Chicago are around 50-60k. Why would pay be so much higher on the coasts?
