The smallest possible size for anything in the universe is the Planck Length, which is 1.6 x10-35 m across.
So sounds like pixels. But: the location of the next particle can be anywhere, so that means its smooth.
The way I see it, we've got waves, which is internally and externally unaffected matter, and particles, which is a collapsed wave due to external conditions. Apparently no collapse happens below the Planck length.
