Why is it evolving so fast?
Is this nominal?
Two separate sets of very similar hypermutations occuring seemingly independently (UK and SA).
I think that is very odd.

Thought the UK strain was discovered in September and the new strain in South Africa only recently?South Africa was in lockdown and opened up to international travel a few months ago.Could be it was visitors from the UK who introduced the new Covid strain into South Africa where it mutated.

It isn't. As the virus becomes more prevalent, so do mutations and selection pressure. The virus mutates pretty much every time it replicates, so the more replication, the more mutations. This was bound to happen and fully in line with expectations. These two strains are also not identical.

Is it?
There is a different flu strain every year that requires a new vaccine every year.
We'll likely have a different covid every year (it will just be lumped in with the flu).

Both strains were adapting to the same environment (the human body).
It is not surprising that that two separate strains would converge to a similar solution since they are faced with similar environments.

Mutations become more common the more people are infected. That's one of the reasons for the measures were taking against the spread.
It might be the exact same strain, because someone imported it to UK from ZA or vice versa.
