I don't think there should be any question that a parachute gives you a better chance to survive during an ejection than hitting the ground at terminal velocity. There's sky divers who have logged hundreds, even thousands of jumps. That's better the single jump they would have logged with no chute.

It's actually amazing just how reliable parachutes are. I think this year was the first real documented case of a double malfunction resulting in death and this 1 out of 50,000,000 jumps. Deaths do happen but they are almost exclusively the result of human error.

that's really the best answer. They're not safe cause people die, but you probably wont.
