While that's unlikely here, at least in the short term, the pace of mutations is a positive sign since mutations usually make themselves less harmful. If it had an extremely high mutation rate, then we'd need to both fear it being too much of a moving target to develop an effective vaccine and also that it'd increase the odd of that one-in-billion mutation that causes it to be much more harmful instead of less.
As an individual, it's probably best to take any advice handed out by governments with a huge grain of salt. Use some common sense when it comes to social distancing and stop believing that mask are some kind of magical talisman. The main thing is to realize that the agenda of health officials might differ from your goals so continue to be skeptical without being an absolute contrarian just for the sake of being contrarian.
