Look at what a complete shitshow the Imperial College model for the pandemic was. The world took that output at face value and made lots of really stupid and counterproductive decision based on it. Same thing has happened many times when setting political policy based on flawed models or erroneous data. You need to understand your data, how it is calculated, and what are reasonable expected results so if the output is out of range, you can investigate if there was an input and/or model error or if there is actually something revolutionary coming from the data.
