As for a source, it's too early to know 100% for certain that this strain is less deadly but in general viruses mutate over time into forms that are more contagious but less harmful. Every once in a while a mutation goes the other way, which tends to cause it to die out quickly but do a lot of damage in the burn out period. The ratio of mutations that go in the less damage-more contagion direction to more damage-less contagion is really high, like in the millions. It happens, but not often.
Odds are that the new strain will crowd out the older strains, infect more people, cause minimal damage to them (though there will be outliers, including deaths), and give them immunity to this and most other existing strains but perhaps not to future strains.
