>>12491137There's been a huge battle over this. Mainstream doctors did argue for a while that chronic Lyme doesn't exist, and some still maintain that it doesn't, but the tide seems to be changing on that. It really shouldn't have been questioned, test animals were given the recommended antibiotic treatment for acute Lyme, and autopsies later revealed active infections. There was a study that tested 1k antibiotics, and none of them were capable of completely killing the bacteria. They found a three drug combo that worked,I'm not sure anyone's using it due to costs, but it's proof that a multi-pronged approach is needed. The main approach now seems to be to test for co-infections and treat those first, then go after the borrelia. Some doctors are willing to use some pretty strong combinations of antibiotics, but there's obvious risks to that (I had acute lyme and balked at months of antibiotics, figuring they may be just as damaging as the infection, but I'm not sure I made the right choice at this point). There's also a drug being tested called Disulfiram that's commonly used to help alcoholics abstain from alcohol. It sounds a little too good to be true, but maybe it really will be a breakthrough. Unless the Disulfiram really works, then unfortunately many people are still stuck with the prognosis of cycling antibiotics over the course of years to slowly rebuild their health.
