First of all, there are plenty of species that do in fact produce for offspring of one sex rather than the other (e.g. ants). Secondly, a trait or collection of traits that tend to result in more offspring of gender X than gender Y will not necessarily result in a constant increase in the relative proportion of X unless there are other selective pressures in the environment that select for these traits themselves. This is a consequence of something called the Hardy-Weinberg Principle.
