By the time you're actually ready and comfortable with the material, you're probably 5 or 6 years late. If it's earlier, you're not actually ready or don't have the right standards. From there, you're late to your career. If you got a job that makes 70k annual after college, your strategy cost you at least 300k all to do a lot of work yourself beforehand to be bored in class and not want to do tedious homework and end up getting poor grades. But yeah, sure, go to college old and not fit in with the crowd or be able to relate

Then you have to be taking 2x the number of classes as everyone else for 3 years. Seriously, if we have to explain this to you then you better be doing psychology or something that doesn't involve math and basic thinking skills

Not what I meant, if you go to uni for a hard STEM field with no or little knowledge of the curriculum you will have a stressful time and you would need to spend a lot of time going to classes and studying and not have a lot of time to enjoy and get involved into extracurricular activities, tell me if it is not your impression that the majority of uni students in hard fields have a rough uni experience because they get overwhelmed by all of the uni hameswheeling activities or they dont but are mediocre and dont get noticed

don't know where you live but here, most of the times, as long as you can prove to the professor that you are knowledgeable of their subjects they will allow you to skip classes and only take tests and exams, class presence counts very little and only if you dont do well on the finals.

I've only heard of self-taught programmers. Have you heard of a self-taught physicist or mathematician?

Self study becomes extremely hard when the material is suddenly dull and more complicated. 99% of people that do try self-studying don't go far at all.

If you're going to do this, you can pay far less to skip the courses & challenge exams & get a degree without wasting 4 yrs. But then you miss out on all the networking which is at least 50% of the point, more like 90% if you intend to work in the field.

Probably a better plan would be to take one year off, study hardcore & master as much as you can, then enroll & roll through easy first year stuff with a 4.0gpa while focusing on connecting with the other star students & faculty. (And trying to keep as far ahead as possible in the time saved by being able to breeze through projects) but realistically even if you lose ground to the point that you're longer ahead of the game by year 4, you've still built up a killer GPA, you're already on the postgraduate track & all the profs think you're a genius.

v good post with the exception of bringing "profs think genius" into it. I think if one attempts to hide that one was familiar with a subject to make it seem he gets everything on the spot is very petty and insecure. A major character flaw
