He might have felt uncomfortable there or like a minority, but Jews are a small minority across the world, so that is not unique to his experience at university. I would also feel out of place if I went to school in rural Idaho or Wyoming or something because I've never been there and it would probably feel like a much different cultural and geographic setting from what I'm used to, but that wouldn't necessarily mean that these people hate me or view me as some kind of outsider. Its perfectly normal to feel uncomfortable in settings that are culturally unfamiliar. Your first instinct should not be to label the people around you as racist/homophobic/intolerant/etc.
That being said, yes Ed Frenkel is pretty based, and I think every high school student should be exposed to his lectures. Another mathematicican who has the same kind of passion and communication skills was John Horton Conway. Actually, John Conway, Paul Halmos, and Ed Frenkel all exerted a huge influence on me. They were inspiring men and inspiring mathematicians.
