It's a convolution of an exponential function. It's like your sweeping through a domain to see where your function ressonates. If you use complex numbers you get the Fourier transform, so the sweep corresponds with sweeping through frequencies.

I am also a 6th semester EE and I still can't write a transfer function.
All of the algebra is confusing to me.
Really hate circuit analysis and Laplace transforms, I'm hoping there's some specialization I can do for the next 3 semesters where I don't have to do this anymore.

I find engineers usually lack intuition on mathematical objects because of the way they are taught, i.e. in a recipe-like manner.

Nah, you can visualize it like using an equalizer on an audio track. If you sweep a narrow band you can stop which frequencies are loudest.
