Research psychology is mostly useful in discovering new methods of treatment. Treatment is valuable, in that it attempts to troubleshoot the most complicated computational mechanism on the planet (if not the observable universe).
Psychology will likely become less and less relevant as our understanding of neurology increases, but that's so far off, it's barely worth considering.
In the immediate future - I think that studies which join together the base mechanisms of the brain (neurology) with the wide-ranging observable data (psychology) will prove hugely valuable.
