If the Earth is essentially a giant magnet then could it be possible to generate electricity with satellite coils that orbit the Earth?
Is the earths magnetic field too weak or would the satellites be too far away to really do anything more sufficient than solar power?

I think it would be too far away.
Also I think that the satellite would start spinning instead of the shaft because there would be nothing holding the satellite still

2 Even if you somehow could, keep the coils in a geosynch orbit that's stable, if you did enough of it you might slow down the Earths' rotation on it's axis, and that would be bad.

It would be better to bury the magnets as deep as possible. If there is enough relative motion between earth crust and the center we could make a significant amount of energy, although this could alter earth's rotation, ultimately screwing climate dynamics forever.
