The real answer seems to be "we don't fucking know what kind of effect it would really have" with some papers I've read claiming its most damaging effect would be a temporary darkening of the sky and a slight increase in UV radiation due to damage done to the ozone layer. Which could have a temporary negative effect but is a far cry from the "all life dead in an instant" stories I was fed when I was younger.
I'm not doubting anything, in fact I need this to be a dangerous event as I'm writing a novel that features a mass extinction, but it has to be something grounded in reality and rooted in true science. So I have to separate the sensationalism from the actual facts.
