It's a longshot from what I actually want to work on but I'm 27 and already a failure, having missed the mark of getting into a phD twice due to forgetting to send my documents and missing an exam due to being piss drunk. And now the stars have aligned and for the next 3 years I will be doing shit I find rather boring since they changed the project in the last second, while receiving a paltry stipend.
On one hand I will basically receive money for fucking around with colored liquids, on the other hand I will have an increasing desire to kill myself. Is it worth it specializing in such way when all I want is to use viruses as a vector for somatic gene therapy or creating new strains of mushrooms? Does the phD limit me in any way for future projects and fields?
