So the way I know how to solve is by finding the roots of the polynomial that results from the determinant of the matrix (see attached image). However, I have two values for the coulomb integral $\alpha$ so I am not sure how to proceed.

That is not LCAO. You are already given the wave functions (5s and 6s) and their energies (-8 and -9 eV). How do you construct the vector for the bonding wavefunction from the 5s and 6s wavefunctions? Do you need to consider the anti-bonding wavefunction of the two?
