I always thought (and probably many think still think) that mathematics says about the underlying laws of nature in some sense.
And also the fact that formal maths is based on some statements which are believed to be true, and are not empirical facts in the sense it has no relation to the world that affects us in every sense, always kind of made me uncomfortable. But the discomfort was always sidelined by the belief in maths. Because everyone said so, that "pure maths is the foundation of all sciences."
Well now I'm starting to think that mathematics should be used as a tool and universities shouldn't stress too much on having a 200 pages proof of " 1 +1 =2" and others like "6 != 16".
I know many people get offended about critique of axiomatic system which stresses solely on reason and disregards empirical facts. I used to too, I think I just want to say we need to think again. Or rather observe.
