I am a humanities student who wants to get into math. Where do I start? I almost failed math at school so I'm basically a beginner.

You can probably break math down into three or four disciplines in my opinion, all of which are deeply interlinked. I would probably start with euclidean geometry to be honest, there's a really good textbook that I used in high school you can get it on ebay for really cheap. After that, I would probably study algebra, just the coordinate plane and how to use functions. Calculus is the logical next step, calculus is basically the study of "change" aka the study of infinitesimals first in the form of limits, then apply that to derivatives and antiderivatives and then infinite series. After that I would probably continue with calculus and study calculus in many variables. in my opinion linear algebra should be studied alongside basic algebra but that's not how it's done typically, I'm a college sophomore and I'm doing it for the first time. It's easy to teach yourself to do the calculations to get an A but it's really really hard to understand and it's really important I think it should probably be taught at an earlier age.

Read the first 8 chapters of baby rudin. If that's too hard then don't bother learning math. Thats where you start.

I would recomend an algebra book to start.
I learned with a book in spanish, Carmen Laveaga,algebra, or an equivalent in english is a good place to start

Basic mathematics the book. Covers all high school stuff up to precalculus with greater depth. Then after that you can do calculus, lin alg and all that jazz, but figure out that book first.

Khan Academy. start at Kindergarten (seriously) and do every Grade. then make sure you are extremely polished with Algebra, Geometry and Precalc/Trigonometry
everything else (Calculus, Linear Algebra etc) will build on this foundation and if you do not have this foundation then chances are you will have a completely miserable time later on

algebra, algebra, algebra. Get good at algebra. Have a rock solid foundation in algebra.

Currently working on a computer engineering BS. The highest level math I've taken so far is differential equations (this, after taking calc 1-3). So far all of the math I have taken invariably uses algebra. If you're good at algebra, you have a good chance at being a solid mathematician.

Geometry and trig are also good foundations, but algebra is by far the most important. Its importance can't be overstated. Learning algebra for anything math related is like learning how to read for anything literature related.

IDK what book he was referring too, but Moise and Downs is a classic choice. It might be hard to find at this point though, so Weeks and Adkins is a good option.

I do not recommend the physical copy of openstax, those books aren't that good.
I think you need algebra for it, but I would recommend something like A Transition to Advanced Mathematics as early as you can manage.

What do you consider cool? You could study 2D constructions by compass and straightedge or Galois theory. There is a book, Geometry: Euclid and Beyond that you might like.

It really doesn't build on it as much as you think.
As long as you understand the field axioms and are comfortable applying them you can leave any theorem to the reference book.

I'll second this, but ammend that being comfortable with algebra is more important than actually being good at it. Of course, by the time you're comfortable, you'll also probably be decently good.

Plenty of STEMlords manage to graduate without being comfortable in algebra. These are the fags that complain that "school taught me nothing" and "I forgot everything I ever learned after the exam". Without an intuitive understanding of algebra, this experience is inevitable.
