Proof, part 1:
Penrose has done some serious physics, namely his singularity theorems, cosmic censorship conjecture, and twistors, plus some not-too-memey mathematics, such as Penrose tilings and tensor graphical notation, but he's also come out with loads of crazy stuff:
-- his theory of consciousness coming from microtubule solitons is essentially impossible; the brain is too warm and wet for quantum physics to matter and microtubules are too teeny-tiny to transmit thought
-- the idea that gravity causes wavefunction collapse requires the wavefunction to be real, but we know it isn't unless we also throw out locality, but GR relies on locality very intimately
-- conformal cyclic cosmology is either the same as inflation, hence a meme name for a non-meme theory, or it's not inflation and is incoherent meme nonsense
-- he believes LQG and the Ashtekar new variables to be our best bet at QG, as opposed to, say, string theory. LQG says empty space must have a huge (i.e Planckian) entropy, but Penrose knows the early universe was very low in entropy
-- his pop-sci book 'The Road to Reality' is decent but it's a complete meme to say it's aimed at the popular audience.
