The idea with GABA hypothesis is that the chronic deficits of GABA leads to excess cortical stimulation of stress or worry associated ideation, ultimately causing low mood in susceptible populations.
With alcohol, you create a transient inhibitory stimulation in the brain and mask these GABA deficits, making you feel less depressed. However, over prolonged use, this will inevitably lead to decreased sensitivity to non-alcohol associated GABA, worsening symptoms when sober.
