Recall the definition of a complex number
$z=a+bi : a, b \in \mathbb{R}$

The distance from the origin can be found using the Pythagorean therem.
$|z| = \sqrt{a^2+b^2}$

Follows that
$i=0+1i$
$|i| = \sqrt{0^2+1^2} = \sqrt{1}=1$

i think of it like this: the rule hasn't changed, it's just that the value you take isn't "i" itself but how many times "i" is repeated. As in 2i = i + i, so in this case you would take the square of 2

The Pythagorean theorem is only defined for scalar distances on a right angle triangle. A point on a plane is not a scalar value.

this is not Euclidean triangle. this is in the Minkowski plane where scalar product (the "a^2" in classic pythagorean theorem) works differenly. there are vectors which square to -1, so if you insist on defining lengths, its length is i. there are also non-zero vectors whose lengths is 0. it's not a contradiction, it's just different geometry.

That makes almost perfect sense, it's on the other side of a point, but with some angle.

Maybe we should mark it as i(90) or 90,90 to define a number on tilted axises, which we can use e.g. if we have number composed of two dimensions, which are lineary dependent, or maybe even other function...

Graphing system like that gives new perspective and mathlab is lame.

Sure when you first uphold your dear axioms and draw a triangle with a hypotenuse of exactly $\sqrt{2}$ . Or a circle where the ratio is actually $\pi$ and not an approximation.
