Anyone in here learned in EM waves? Im just wondering why is it that fuse boxes dont stop EM waves form damaging your computers if it does its damage via a strong electric current. I mean, whats the point of those boxes then?

It takes time for fuses to blow, it's possible that in the time it takes for the fuse to blow that your device will be fried. Fuse boxes are for stopping short circuits in appliances and other things plugged into the wall from ruining house wiring and causing a fire. Those boxes are not for protecting your devices, they're for preventing costly building repairs and electrical fires. Also I'm assuming you mean the breaker box, fuses imply one time use.

From what I know, EM waves are large and they mostly effect large objects which is what makes powerlines such a good target for them which leads to your appliances. The best protecting from an electro magnetic pulse (which I think is what you're getting at) is literally unplugging your devices when not in use. Surge protectors can help for some minor protection from grid surges. Honestly if there are EM waves powerful enough to harm your devices, everything in the grid will probably be messed up pretty bad. Most electric grids are not very robust because it's more glamorous to spend money on green energy then grid hardening. Are you more worried about man made EM waves or natural ones?

Man made ones are destructive but the natural ones are on a whole other level. Trying to decide between a real EM protector, the ones made by Stan Deyo and a UPS or other alternatives. Just seams to me that a switch should reset in these events. A faraday cage is worthless if you are still plugged in to the wall where the real danger comes from.

The Stan Deyo looks like a scam to me. There's no way something like that could protect against lightning and EMPs. If you can predict when the EM burst is coming, unplug your devices from the wall and wrap them in a metal foil and ground the foil. That's probably the best you could do. No surge protector, UPS or other thing will give you the protection of physical separation from the grid. Even turning off the breakers won't help because you could get arcing across the contacts.

Its patented technology and its being deployed by governments and its also something the government developed, he only improved upon what was already there. Its most certainly not a scam im just wondering if its worth it when a UPS would do effectively the same thing. If an EMP was happening or was going to happen, I could do just as you say and a UPS would probably last long enough before melting down to do it if there was no warning.

Personally, as someone in the power distribution industry and a degree in electrical engineering, I can say that I would absolutely not trust the Stan Deyo. I can't find it on any government websites, and the EM resilient gear that I have installed for my work is much beefer than what that guy is selling. If you want whole house protection, a whole house surge protector could help. (they're cheaper than the Stan Deyo too) A UPS won't do anything because their main purpose is to supply power while your local grid is down. UPS provide little to no protection to EM. Don't buy into the hype of what someone says on their website. Again, grounded faraday cages/foil around your devices and separation from the grid (unplugged) is the gold standard. There is nothing that can automatically protect you from such an EM burst. If you really want to go the extra mile then install some lightning arrestors too.

If you're really set on extra protection you could look up HEMP surge protectors. However they are expensive and require professional installation.

A UPS uses a battery as a inbetween from the outlet and device. You are effectively just running on the battery and its being recharged by the outlet. They tend to offer the highest surge protection just based on general principle. A good UPS wont even function if you have a bad battery because theres no way for power to pass through like however they design phones. Thats my understanding of them anyways. You may know more about them than I do.

I suppose looking at UPS that way makes sense. The only think I would worry about is the EM going beyond the circuit's spec then arcing and damaging the battery, then the battery exploding or leaking, etc. I suppose it's better than nothing but I don't think it'd provide much isolation.

One other thing I forgot, the type of UPS I think you're referring to is a line interactive UPS which are more expensive than the basic ones you can get. More specifically you'd want a UPS that is line interactive and galvanically isolated.

Thats the same thought that I had. But if you are at that point then your house is probably already on fire elseware and its time to run. I would think that if you were getting a surge enough to meltdown the UPC then your breaker would trigger or the breaker on the UPS. Arc is the reason they have a surge limit, the battery is a firewall but it can blast past that if it really wants to. But since we have not seen one of these events in years its hard to say what they are capable of. Just so much we dont know.
Yes, line interactive are the ones I am referring to, didnt know it had a name. I just concluded this feature based on the evidence.

If you have a high enough induced voltage on the power lines you could get arcing in your home wiring regardless of the breaker tripping. (home wiring is basically an antenna so even if you're off grid you may be screwed) But at that energy level everything is FUBAR anyway.

That is true, home wiring can also absorb that energy, making a home surge protector only half effective. I think that UPS is the rout that im going to go with or double up. Home surge protector as a first responder from outside forces then a UPS to shield from anything being caused by home wiring. Then just hope I can unplug shit before the meltdown. Im lucky to have gotten you today, I think this is probably the most effective plan outside of moving underground. Of course this is only in the event of an actual EMP but we are actually overdue for a large event and the government isnt doing much to stop it. To busy trying to get Trump and stop cattle ranching.

Don't bet on any real grid improvements. Most of the time is spent on trying to integrate small solar and wind farms with not much time spent on actual grid hardening.

For the UPS see if you can spring for something "laboratory" or "scientific" grade. Those will tend to be more robust and have good filtering since they're meant to protect sensitive equipment from line noise/surges. Do be warned, it's stuff you need to request a quote for, so they can be quite spendy.

Not going in that deep. Just looking in to some reasonable precautions. I work at night and am usually home during the day which is the only time these events can occur so I think my plan falls under reasonable and at the least should give me reaction time since the reason these events are so destructive is they are not short.
