Can someone who deeply understands electromagnetism help me out here?

So charged particles such as proton and electron create a "field" around them. This field exerts a kinetic force on massive particles that causes them to move, ad infinitum.

Why do field disturbances propagate in waves in all directions?

Charges generate a field. If the charge noves, the field also "moves" so it's still centered on the charge. Coulomb's force doesn't act on massive objects per se, but on other charged objects. Changing electrical fields induce magnetic fields (and waves through more complicated phenomena).

I still don't understand why the field propagates in a wave. Is it because the field cannot propagate instantaneously?

It's not really clear what your actual question is. Are you asking why the EM field behaves dynamically like a wave? The mathematical answer is because Maxwell's equations imply a wavelike equation. The physical answer is because physics is local, and so the effects of stuff happening in one location cannot be felt in another location faster than the speed of light. The electric field has to change as you move the source, but you can't just shift the entire field all at once - the changes in the field have to obey this notion of locality, and so these changes propagate out like a wave.

Okay this is what I was imagining. I don't suspect we can go any deeper with regard to the "why" at this point (locality/the form of maxwell's equations)

There are assumptions required to make Maxwell's eqns work like continuity and differentiability of fields, numeric values.

classical information cannot propagate faster than light
waves are due to the oscillating/vibrational nature of the phenomenon and probably some deeper constraints
that's in contrast to purely quantum information like spin, which can seemingly act instantaneously, e.g. through entanglement, and thus does not propagate as a wave

Huygens–Fresnel principle
be more concise with what you mean with "field disturbances" and what exactly is puzzling you about these "propagating in all directions"

if you want to have a better answer you will have to figure out how to ask a better question and also figure out what you actually want to know.
you seemingly struggle with both.

Field is area, but not necessarily volume, of space, in which force is effective according to limits. Object that have mass are not called fields, even thou they have field. Particles are the carrier of field with field itself on most physics in seen in this lifetime.
