If you never do the calculation or carry out the experiment, you'll never "get it". This is why I despise popsci so much - not necessarily that it dumbs down the material or oversensationalizes it, but rather it doesn't really offer understanding. It just sorta throws watered down facts at you. And then we are left with half the readers at full Dunning-Kruger, and the other half like OP, not really understanding anything because the popsci offered no understanding to begin with.
