Sure, but diligence and work isn't everything in a math degree. Math isn't about crunching the numbers despite what most brainlets think. Not everyone has the apptitude to work out a proof.

In theory maybe, but you'd have to sacrifice everything else in your life to get diminishing returns. If you're not above a certain intelligence threshold, you'll most likely end up hating what you're doing and drop out of your own will.

Fulfilling checkbox isn't necessarily about talent. Getting a degree is checking boxes needed for graduation and plenty of people shouldn't have a degree but do because universities are a business for profit.
