A function's uniqueness makes them applicable to equations in such a way that the resulting equation is still unique. Apply the power of two to the equation for example. It gives you a unique righthand side. With the root function that doesn't work anymore, because its domain isn't continuous. You can't know which branch is the principal branch in the equation.
