I dont really follow rocket happenings, what is the meaning of this? So the rocket crashed well accidents happen.
But what's so special about this particular rocket? Its a musk rocket so cheaper because it can land but that's not new anymore so whats so special now?
Is it just a bigger rocket? The construction is cheaper by the kilo for bigger rockets?

Meant to go to mars and back and fully reusable. Uses a new engine developed by spacex called the raptor that allows them to use methane for fuel. The methane fuel can be made from scratch with the resources on mars and as a result startship can fly back to earth after dropping some humans off or can bring them back

This was a very early test.
Musk estimated only a 1 in 3 chance that it would succeed.
That the thing nearly landed dead center with only 2/3 of it's engines functioning is highly promising.

you need to make it fucking huge before the appropriate gauge of stainless is thick enough to be reasonable to work with
also smaller rockets of appropriate gauge tend to be balloon tanks
see the Atlas booster for why people are skittish to use balloon tanks

1. Pretty much everyone else is using hydrolox.
Liquid hydrogen is not at all dense, needs huge tanks and hydrogen engines tend to be weak because the required turbopumps are huge.
See: ULAs way to fabricate tanks by milling isogrids into aluminium/lithium alloy.
So the weight of the tank is way more critical for them because they have less thrust and need larger tanks.
2. 304l has an advantage wich only recently became widely known, it gets stronger at cryogenic temperatures.
3. Starship needs to withstand re-entry heating.
304l withstands high temperatures way better than carbon fiber or aluminium lithium alloy.
For Delta, that doesn't matter as re-use is not planned.

It was a mostly sucessfull test of several aspects of Starship:

And here is where things started to go wrong since the header tank had too little pressure

And since SpaceX has proved they can perform propulsive landing with F9 and hopper before, I don't see why it shouldn't work after fixing the relatively simple fuel pressure issue with the header tank.

SN9 is pretty much ready now and will get that issue fixed.
Can't be long untill it flies, and probably lands sucessully.

It proved the header tank needs to be on a gimbal to maintain pressure. There's not enough bandwidth on the data bus to manage pressurization in flight.

that's really stupidly overcomplicated
from what I understand, the problem was with head space causing bubbles in plumbing
they need a high performance air release valve, not put the entire fucking header tank on gimbal

they are the first people trying something like that in full scale and even Falcon sometimes fucks it up with much easier flight profile

Even Shittle managed to reenter safely, most of the time. And Starship design is actively avoiding its flaws from day 1.
The only spacecraft that didn't survive reentry (out the ones that were meant to survive it) was the Shuttle.
Seriously, the more I know, the more I hate Shuttle.
