>>12442319We can imagine a possible world where the way you are doesn't emerge from other laws of physics, basically you would be a law onto yourself, having your own special snowflake laws of action dedicated just for you that determine how you act. But given your current state of mind the next choice would be predetermined by those laws, that is to say by your thoughts/feelings/values/personality/etc. OR there would be some RNG mixed in, but adding any randomness would only undermine your control over your actions. And while the way you are and you act couldn't even in principle be deduced from stuff that happened before you existed, because you have these special laws dedicated just for you, you still never originally chose the way you are. And in the same sense that people "couldn't have done otherwise" at any particular moment in a deterministic universe, the same would still apply to you. You just do what you do because of the way you are.
So basically, the difference is only whether there's some background reasons like genes and environment that cause the way you are, or you are the way you are for no particular reason. I don't think that makes any difference on how "free" you are.
