Why do all the big Western pharmaceutical companies all go for the unproven mRNA strategy?
Let's assume for argument's sake that it not a /pol/-tier nefarious reason like reducing the population's fertility.
I get that mRNA vaccines have advantages, but in this scenario were you want to roll it out as quickly as possible, it makes more sense to go for proven technologies we have more experience with.
The main reason I can think of is that pharmaceutical companies wanted to develop mRNA vaccines before, and they know that the governments and regulatory organizations now will approve basically anything they put forth, and exempt them from liability. So they do it not because it's the most sensible strategy for developing a COVID-19 vaccine, but because it's a golden opportunity for them to get their new technologies approved.
Or maybe there is something about the coronavirus that makes other technologies unsuitable. However, the Russians and the Chinese seem to have successfully developed vaccines with other approaches.
