Organic synthesis is fun and I miss when I used to do it in uni.
But apart from enjoying the process, is there anything worth actually making for a hobby chemist? I'm thinking about investing in the basic equipment but I have no idea what I'd actually make with it, given all the fun stuff is illegal and I'm way too dumb to avoid jail.
Also, any good resources for hobby organic chemists?

You read new papers and copy what they did to make their thing

Or you look up compounds on wikipedia and try to see if you can extract it from whatever plant it comes from.

That's what I would do anyways.

Then regulated heat input distillation machine which sustains temperature at boiling and not boiling too fast is possible also.

The actual chemistry is pretty simple. It's basically just hydrolyzing lysergamides to lysergic acid and coupling that with diethylamine.
What makes the synthesis afaik somewhat troublesome is that all those compounds are pretty light sensitive and easily epimerize, so you have to pretty much do everything in the dark and run columns to separate the epimers. Actually, most of the lab work seems to be purification.
But your biggest problem is probably getting the precursors.
Growing ergot seems like a massive pita and more work than everything you'll do in the lab afterwards. It also requires a completely different kind of knowledge that's unrelated to chemistry.
Content of ergot alkaloids in HBWR and morning glory isn't that high and they supposedly contain some other alkaloids that you can't easily separate from the lysergamides, so they're allegedly not a viable source of lysergamides for LSD synthesis.
The ergotamine pills seem like the easiest way, but good luck getting them.
You'll also have to make diethylamine yourself because it's tightly watched.
On the plus side, one gram of LSD is about 10000 trips, so you don't need to make that much of it.

There's the story of the elephant that died from 300 mg, so I guess it could actually be a lethal dose.
But obviously nobody ever administered doses this high to humans, so we don't really know.

Have you tried making luminol? I highly recommend the synthesis. Otherwise pigments and essential meds like aspirin are a lot of fun. You can also legitimately contribute to science quite a bit, I look for new antimicrobials and stuff and make proteins. It's a lot of fun.

Not exactly otc though. I'm sure the chemical suppliers you can buy this from are aware of this and will call the cops if they think there's something suspicious.
And if ordering from china, there's customs.
Also I didn't find any reports of that reaction carried out with lysergol, so you'll probably have to optimize the reaction conditions first.
