Free will does not matter in this case. If everyone didn't have free will and chose to hate cowardice, then that would be attributed as a natural human response against cowardice. However, if free will does exist, then it would be equivalent to saying that humans naturally CHOOSE to respond negatively towards cowards.
Whether or not they have the free will to do so does not change the fact that they do so anyways.
This argument also explains why free will couldn't justify cowardice, since morals don't exist in this system, and the human response is, for lack of a better description, what it is.
