Could be that the answer to the fermi paradox and the seeming lack of advanced life in the universe is simply because there's no point to it. Say, past a certain level of knowledge and intelligence you learn about and comprehend of an entire new plane of conscious existence, and instead of trying to build spaceships you just go to the other place.
