Why are fundamental particles associated with symmetries and their representations?

Ok so the universe has some symmetries, gotcha, and you can describe them as groups, gotcha. How do you from this to saying "particles correspond to representations of Lie algebras of a symmetry group". That's a big conceptual jump, what am i missing?
