What's the consensus about short-sightedness? Is it genetic or you develop it from not looking far away for long periods of time?

It's both genetic and environmental. It depends on how flexible your eyes are. They will change shape in accordance to how you use them if you have the genes for it. I've looked at screens all my life, read a lot. I spend 95 percent of my day staring at a screen or papers. My eyesight is great and only my time required to refocus has increased a bit. My brother who has a much more balanced life is affected by prolonged screen usage almost immediately. I got my eye genes from dad, he from mum I guess.

Or rather lacking proper tuning of eye. The eye needs to understand both far and near. If you keep your kid focused only on books/computers that they don't go outside to see the cars/stars/trees/park, the eye can't tune for both.

I don't know what proportion of cases of mild myopia are from only looking at things up close but I can vouch that this is possible and this kind of myopia is in fact reversible, at least partially, even if the jew eye doctors insist that myopia only gets worse and that you need to buy their product. for good eye health, make sure you look at bright sunlit objects (the spectrum of sunlight is far better for your eyes than artificial light and the brightness is also good), and look at objects at varying distances, trying to make out their details to force your eyes to focus and excercise and stretch the little muscles in them and keep your eye from developing long term or permanent deformations.
