It takes time for your brain to physically make the connections necessary to fully "get" a concept. Our brains weren't designed to fully absorb that much information in one semester, that's asking for too many connections to be made too quickly, causing burnout especially with tests and other classes thrown in. It's only after your brain recovers from the burnout and builds the connections stronger that you become smarter and start to understand.

Same thing with weight lifting - if you work a muscle constantly you'll stop making gains and actually get weaker. Weight lifters constantly have to take breaks and rest periods to allow their muscles to regrow and when they come back they're often much stronger.
