We could be moving backwards, forwards, or even at a scaled speed, but this is all with reference to some universal observer time. All that we know is that the current is a single state, and we move to the next. That being said, "reverting" to a state exactly 1 year ago would result in absolutely nothing, given that this is performed universally. Consider time as a 4th dimension. If that's too complicated, think of a 2d world, and the third dimension is added, which is time. Every 2d slice is then a state of that universe. An outside observer could then jump to any slice they wanted.
