How did you handle the "grad school vs job after college" debate? What choice did you make? Do you think it was the best choice?

It wasn't a choice for me. I wanted to do a PhD without a hesitation. You barely scratch the surface in undergrad physics, and I liked doing research.

this,wasn't sure if i wanted a masters when i was freshman sophomore but as a junior it is becoming very apparent that undergrad lacks a lot of depth. Definitely going for masters.

I knew I wanted to go to grad school the moment I applied for undergrad so I made the choice long ago. I think it was a good choice, especially because the job market is in shambles and I get to ride out the recession without having to deal with it.

FYI: masters lacks a lot of depth. PhD is the only option honestly.

Depends what you want. If you want a good survey of the field to understand what people tell you and show you then a master's can be enough. If you want to understand exactly how to produce those insights and execute them then a PhD is the best bet.

Masters are for people who are just trying to apply cutting edge stuff, PhD if you wanna make it

In Europe you have to complete a masters program before you are able to do a Phd. As far as I know the same thing applies many other countries like Japan and Canada.

In the US that's of course handled differently

I started working for a prof as a researcher part time during my undergrad. At the time I wasn't sure if I wanted to go to grad school. I liked the idea of doing research, which swayed my opinion towards grad school. My major was mechanical engineering. I heard from people who got co-op jobs (I didn't) that with just an undergrad you're limited in what jobs you can do. You're more likely to end up picking existing components from catalogs and spreadsheets than you are to actually do groundbreaking design work, which is what I wanted to do. That's really what pushed me over the edge to decide to go to grad school. As to whether it was a good decision, I don't know yet. I'm one semester into my Masters.

i had a job lined up and turning it down would have been crazy

i don't know. i worked in a lab so i don't know what research is like at all
my job sucks though so like, i regret leaving my youth to become a wagie but having money is very nice
