I do a lot of mapping in GIS systems and data management.
Field work is a tiny part of what I do because we get most of our data from university researchers, environmental consultants or amateur naturalists.
When I do get to do field work it is usually to go and verify a claimed site for a species of conservation concern and gather specimens or to check on a historic site to see how it has changed over time.
Very rarely we convince the government to give us a few thousand dollars for an exploratory survey in a new area where we go out and look for new and/or rare species.
I spend a lot of my personal time hiking and stuff though to look for neat things.
