1. You cannot divide base 10 by three and four like you can inches and feet and yards and gallons, and get a whole number or a whole number ratio.
2. Common ratios of trig are not whole numbers as they are in English units
3. There is nothing special about base 10 besides the number of fingers and toes we are supposed to have.
4. The complaint about conversions between units being difficult is largely moot since you choose the unit for the scale you are working at.
5. whole number ratios allow you to count out the ratio as a denominator and a numerator while decimals require you to count sequentially all the significant digits.
I could go on but the point is things that are useful are kept, and stick around until they are not or they become significant problems for the user.
