It could be, there is a „joke“ about our level of ability to interfere with neurochemistry. I goes something like we can only press on the breaks or the accelerator, from there on it’s just trying different substances and amounts (often called adjusting). For the cases that are annoying to other people the breaks are pressed basically the medication makes them lethargic. For the cases that are annoying to the individual itself it’s not really clear, if the breaks or the accelerator should be used. Hence all the weird stuff with the trials of all kinds of psychotropic drugs you can imagine. A theory out among some in the know why using the „breaks“ in the case of all stuff depression related, (which seems counter intuitive because often the depressed people are tired to begin with) is that making people tired or better think less, also makes them have less time, capacity and ability to have the bad thoughts. Some very speculative people go as far as to think this could be why cranial electrotherapy stimulation is so effective.
